Early Attempts at Night Vision Technology

Military tacticians throughout history have seen the advantages of being able to maneuver effectively under the cover of darkness. Historically, maneuvering large armies at night carried such risks that it was rarely attempted.
During WW II, the United States, Britain, and Germany worked to develop rudimentary night vision technology. For example, a useful infrared sniper scope that used near-infrared cathodes coupled to visible phosphors to provide a near-infrared image converter was fielded. A small number, perhaps 300 Sniperscopes, were shipped to the Pacific sometime in 1945, but received very little use. Their range was less than 100 yards, and they were used mainly for perimeter defense. However this device had several disadvantages. The infrared sniper scope required an active IR searchlight that was so large it had to be mounted on a flatbed truck. This active IR searchlight could be detected by any enemy soldier equipped with similar equipment. The rifle-mounted scope also required cumbersome batteries and provided limited range.
However, the infrared sniper scope showed that night vision technology was on the horizon. Military leaders immediately saw many uses for this technology beyond sniping at the enemy under cover of darkness. An army equipped with night vision goggles, helmets, and weapons sights would be able to operate 24 hours a day. The Army Corps of Engineers, for example, would be able to build bridges and repair roads at night providing a measure of safety from airborne attack. The next challenge in night vision technology would be the development of passive systems that did not require IR searchlights that might give away a soldier's position to the enemy.

Eurosatory 06: New Apache Pilot’s Night Vision Sensor Adapted for Cargo, Utility Helicopters
From Rotorhub.com
In early 2007, a cargo helicopter will fly with a fully-integrated Modernised Pilot’s Night Vision Sensor (M-PNVS), the same system that enables US Army Apache Longbow pilots to fly visually in total darkness, indeed the turret will be interchangeable with Apache M-PNVS turrets, according to Beth Garrity-Marchman, LM’s Director of Business Development for Rotary Wing Systems and Weapons. The system is being called Pathfinder and plans include offering it for Chinooks and Black Hawks for the US Army and export customers.
Marchman, a Chinook pilot and combat veteran, explained that LM is developing pathfinder to what she described as a potential operational requirement to improve safety and ease pilot workload in a variety of critical situations, including ‘brown-out’ and ‘white-out’ conditions. The long-wave thermal imager, she said, sees through the dust clouds that create brown-out conditions well enough to show a very distinct horizon even when very little else is visible. The US Army is examining the system, but hasn’t issued a formal requirement.
LM is working with integrated helmet providers to give customers a choice of displays. Marchman recommends a modern helmet that can exploit the sensor’s wide field of view, but will also offer customers other options such as showing the image on an integrated multifunction display or a stand-alone screen.

ATN Optical Quality
OPTICS
Image quality depends on lens design, glass grade, manufacturing tolerances and coating. In order to be in line with well-known premium optical producers we could not cut any corners. ATN lenses are made from the highest-grade optical glass. Our optical designs are calculated with the latest computer software available. We measure our optical tolerances to .0001". We then multi-coat our lenses with our own proprietary coatings that are specifically designed to allow for maximum light transmission.
INNOVATION & EXCELLENCE
Regardless of how mach a person will spend for a scope, $30.00 or $1500.00, the basic design is typically the same. The Cam tube is placed and moved within Outer tube. The Adjusting system is held by one or two 7-pound springs. This has been the standard in the industry for many years.
ATN has established itself as the world leader of night vision riflescopes. We decided to transfer some of our creative night vision designs into our daytime scopes. Due to the lay-out of night vision riflescopes, reticles are 14 times smaller and 10 times more precise then daytime scopes. We used the same innovative "push and pull" mechanism with silicone padding that is in our night vision devices for the Professional series scopes. This created windage and elevation adjustments that are 10,000 % more reliable then other scopes with click adjustments of 1/8" MOA at 100 yards.
